North Americas First Gigabit Dedicated Trackside Network

Background

Nomad Digital has built a state-of-the-art trackside network for Caltrain in California; offering Gigabit connectivity and high bandwidth on the newly electrified San Francisco to San Jose line. Nomad Digital worked to deliver reliable, fast WiFi for commuters, making it the first full-route solution of its kind in North America.

The Solution At a Glance

The challenging requirement to deliver consistent, high-performance, scalable, and future-proof Gigabit connectivity throughout the 51-mile electrified route was achieved by deploying a complex solution involving:

  • 63 radio sites across 9 edge switches using Caltrain’s existing fibre backbone.
  • An always-on-network approach using a combination of mmWave radio and 5G cellular technologies.
  • Using Blu Wireless 60Ghz trackside radio.
  • WiFi6 and hotspot 2.0 capabilities provide capacity to support high bandwidth services such as livestream content and seamless network access.
  • The system design provides for true future-proof dimensioning, ensuring that the architecture is not only relevant today but can adapt and scale to meet the demands of tomorrow.
  • Protected by the Nomad Secure intrusion detection system for cyber security.

Benefits Of Multiple Gigabit Connectivity

Seamless Connectivity: Passengers can enjoy a fast and reliable internet connection for the entirety of their commute, allowing for streaming and video conferencing without interruptions.

CCTV in Real Time: Remotely access a live and high-definition CCTV feed from inside the train to actively monitor onboard security.

Livestream Content: Allows passengers to stay up to date with access to live-streamed content such as important news updates.

Enhance Operational Efficiency: Continuous transmission of data from the fleet enables predictive maintenance and improved scheduling to reduce delays and downtime.

Michelle Bouchard, Executive Director at Caltrain said:

“Our new trackside network provides the broadband that keeps our trains working at their best, whilst also providing our riders with a high-speed WiFi connection. This is a major improvement for both the operation of our railroad and the onboard passenger experience and is another aspect of how the future of Caltrain has arrived.”
