Nomad Digital supports Italo to realise its vision of an advanced travel experience

Nomad Digital, leading specialists in transport connectivity solutions, is working collaboratively with Italo, a leading high-speed rail operator in Italy, to bring to life its vision to provide a safe, reliable, and technologically advanced travel experience. Italo has chosen Nomad Digital’s high performance and high bandwidth train to ground connectivity solution to unlock a range of additional features and services to enhance the customer experience it delivers.

The journey starts with better connectivity

Italo’s decision to select Nomad Digital as its connectivity partner was the result of a competitive and successful proof of concept process and which involved participants being assessed against a range of criteria including technical performance and passenger experience.

The deployment of the new solution began in early 2025 and the majority of Italo’s 51 strong fleet have now been equipped with the latest Internet on Board solution. Italo are already seeing significant improvements to the Wi-Fi performance which includes improved data speeds and reduced latency. Download speeds have increased by 460% and web page load times have reduced by 80%. With passengers now demanding an ‘at home’ connectivity experience wherever they are, Italo plan to offer their fast internet service to all customers free of charge. Their vision however goes way beyond internet access.

Utilising space age technology for a better travel experience

Italy is a country with a challenging geographic landscape in terms of delivering connectivity because it is comprised of 41% mountains and 35% hills. Traditional cellular based mobile networks struggle to provide consistent coverage, especially in remote areas. Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite offers a reliable alternative that’s scalable, robust and future‑proof.

Nomad Digital has supported Italo with their work to test the latest LEO satellite technology along its key route from Milan to Naples. In tests which included the deployment of 2x rail certified antennas per train, the hybrid system (5G+Satellite) managed by Nomad Digital delivered successful and consistent bandwidth performance of >100 Mbps with a peak performance of 350-400 Mbps and latency less than 40 milliseconds. Testing also showed fast recovery after exiting tunnels. Nomad Digital’s intelligent aggregation tool was deployed as part of the project. It helped to ensure that the optimum connectivity method was deployed at each point in the journey in order to maximise performance. Recently, Italo announced that following the trials it would roll-out LEO satellite technology to its entire fleet within a year; one of the first operators to make this commitment.

Expert Review, Paul Vaclik, Head of Innovation, Nomad Digital: The ideal connectivity solution blends different connectivity technologies

Cellular mobile networks are currently the most widely used method for delivering train-to-ground connectivity. While they are relatively cost-effective, they do not provide 100% coverage, particularly in remote areas. Dedicated trackside radio networks, on the other hand, can offer guaranteed bandwidth and low latency, but they often require significantly higher capital investment.

LEO satellite technology has advanced rapidly in recent years and now offers a reliable, scalable and robust alternative. Nomad Digital has been actively involved in testing LEO satellite technology in some of the most challenging geographic environments, demonstrating that it can deliver excellent connectivity performance. As the rail industry continues to embrace digital transformation, satellite-powered solutions will play an increasingly important
role in complementing existing connectivity technologies. This will help ensure passengers benefit from uninterrupted Wi-Fi throughout their journeys. Depending on customer requirements, the optimal connectivity solution of the future is likely to involve a carefully integrated combination of cellular 5G, trackside radio networks, and LEO satellite technology.
