HackTrain identifying challenges and opportunities for rail

HackTrain is supported by the Department for Transport and backed by industry heavyweights including SilverRail, Trainline, Angel Trains, Stagecoach, First Group, Arriva, Go-Ahead Group, National Express, Transport for London, as well as Eurostar, SNCF and MTR.

On Friday 4 November, 80 software developers, designers and entrepreneurs will travel on two defined routes:

  • Eurostar and SNCF services between London, Paris and Lyon
  • Greater Anglia services between London, Colchester and Cambridge.

Nomad Digital, the world’s leading provider of passenger and fleet connectivity solutions to the rail industry, will again support the innovative HackTrain initiative which drives the digital agenda to improve rail connectivity.

On the journeys, software developers, designers and entrepreneurs will be challenged by the rail industry to identify and create new technology solutions that have the potential to improve customer experience and operational efficiency.

Following the hackathon, a 10-day consultation period will follow, after which the best teams will be invited to present back their proposals in mid-November to the UK’s biggest industry influencers. Following this judging process, the winning team will receive support to implement their idea in the rail network.

Co-founder of HackTrain, River Tamoor Baig, said: “The railway industry is the backbone of the UK enabling individuals and businesses to travel and connect with whoever they wish. Technology has disrupted other industries such as finance and aviation making them more efficient and useful to everyone. By harnessing technology and data in the right way we can take the same leap forward in rail.”

Andrew Taylor, Nomad Digital CEO, said “We are delighted to be supporting this initiative again as it very much fits into our philosophy of driving innovation through pioneering solutions that truly benefit the passenger. You can see from the train operators who also back this, that it is recognised as a major influence on the direction of the rail industry.”

HackTrain would like to invite the industry to join them at the HackTrain 3.0 Launch event on Friday 4 November at the prestigious St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel. For more information and RSVP, please visit launch.hacktrain.com
